My research focuses primarily on aiding decision makers to maintain proper ecosystem functioning, services and diversity. Specifically, I aid in the development of conservation and management tools, geared towards scientists and non-scientists alike, in order to facilitate the application and understanding of various ecological principals.
Recently, my research has been focused primarily on helping urban planners increase the resiliency and diversity of their urban forests and improving the ecosystem services they provide. Since urban forest are presently at risk from the impacts of climate change and urbanization, we have developed an innovative tool (functional groups), founded on the principals of functional diversity, to protect our forests and the services they provide. I then implement this conservation tool according to the unique requirements of different project types, such as: highway greening, increasing canopy cover, street and park tree planting plans, identification of problematic or vulnerable city areas, among others.
