Over the course of Summer 2019, several lab members and interns established a permanent urban forestry research plot around the UQAM science campus. All trees, including both public and private, were identified to species and DBH measurements were taken. Using remote sensing and field observations, canopy covers for each individual were entered into a GIS database. This experimental plot is unique in being located completely within an urban setting and by including private trees, which are often missing from urban forest inventories.
The plot will be used in various projects by graduate students from the lab next summer and will be used as a teaching tool in urban forest management for UQAM undergraduate students. Plans to expand the plot around the main UQAM campus are also underway for Summer 2020.
