New Publication in the Journal of Ecology
Alain Paquette and other members of TreeDivNet have published their latest research in the Journal of Ecology, with an article entitled "Tree diversity reduces variability in sapling survival under drought".
The study investigates the impact of tree diversity on seedling and sapling survival in young forest plantations, particularly under drought conditions. Analysis of data from 34 tree diversity experiments worldwide suggests that increasing tree species richness and functional diversity can enhance both mean and stability of plot-level survival, especially during drought. Species with low survival in monocultures demonstrate better survival rates in mixed plantations, with traits such as drought resistance, plant height, and conservative resource acquisition playing crucial roles. The findings emphasize the importance of mixing tree species to stabilize survival rates, particularly in functionally diverse forests containing both drought-resistant and sensitive species.

Johanna starts her master's with the PaqLab!
The PaqLab is thrilled to announce that Johanna Arnet will be joining our team. Johanna recently finished her undergrad at McGill University and her interest in urban forest ecology and the intersection with human physical and mental well-being led her to start a master's with us and the Ziter lab from Concordia!
Her project will examine the spatial and temporal variations in urban temperature, and how the urban forest can be optimized to help mitigate the urban heat island effect. It is also the newest project undertaken by the Urban Forest Research Chaire.
Welcome to the team Johanna - happy to have you on board!

New lab paper on the impact of outdoor place-based learning
Alain Paquette collaborated on a study which aimed to assess the impact of a place-based educational intervention on elementary school students' ability to make unsolicited observations about living organisms. Conducted in Québec, Canada, with 116 students participating remotely, the research found that those who learned about living organisms at home showed a greater ability to make unsolicited observations, leading to factual descriptions, two months after the intervention compared to one week afterward.
The results of this study are now published in the Journal of Biological Education. To consult the full article, click the link below.
