Is it possible to survey buckthorn by drone ?
As part of a new reasearch project in partnership with Canopée, Gauthier is assessing the feasability of using drones as a way to detect two species of invasive buckthorn: common buckthorn and glossy buckthorn. Using a multispectral sensor placed under the drone and flying it over Laval's forests, this project hopes to determine whether buckthorn can be easily spotted from the air after all other species have lost their leaves. If possible, this technique would be an invaluable tool to help manage and control the spread and establishment of buckthorn.
